An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is the process by which a private company first offers its shares to the public, enabling it to raise capital and get listed on stock exchanges like the NSE and BSE. A “Closed IPO” refers to an IPO for which the subscription period i.e the window during which investors can apply for shares, has officially ended.
The closing of the subscription period marks the beginning of a crucial phase between the application deadline and the actual listing of shares on the stock market. During this period for recently closed ipo issues, several key activities occur. These include finalising the basis of allotment, processing refunds or unblocking funds (via the ASBA mechanism), and crediting allotted shares to investors’ demat accounts.
SEBI has streamlined this process significantly, aiming for a T+3 timeline: IPO closed today (T), Allotment finalised (T+1), Shares credited/Funds unblocked (T+2), and Listing on exchanges (T+3).
Once the subscription period for latest closed IPO is over, the most immediate concern for applicants is the allotment status. Knowing where to check this status is crucial. Here are the primary, reliable sources in India:
Checking your allotment status is usually a straightforward process once the basis of allotment is finalised (typically by T+1 day). Here’s how you generally do it using the sources mentioned above:
Simultaneously, keep an eye on your bank account linked via ASBA (Applications Supported by Blocked Amount). If shares are allotted, the corresponding amount will be debited. If no shares are allotted, the blocked funds will be released/unblocked by your bank.
The subscription status indicates the overall demand for an IPO relative to the number of shares offered. It’s usually broken down by investor category: Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs), Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs or HNIs), and Retail Individual Investors (RIIs).
Once the allotment process is complete and shares are credited, the next significant event is the closed ipo listing on the stock exchanges. Post-listing performance tracks how the stock price behaves in the secondary market. Key metrics include:
Tracking this performance can be done using real-time market data available on exchange websites, financial portals, and trading platforms like HDFC Sky.
Analysing historical data of closed ipos in India can offer valuable insights, although past performance is never a guarantee of future results. Some general observations include:
Q1: What happens if an IPO isn’t fully subscribed?
If an IPO fails to meet the minimum subscription requirement set by SEBI (usually 90% of the offer size), the IPO may be withdrawn entirely, and all application money is refunded to investors. If it meets the minimum but remains undersubscribed in certain categories, shares are allotted based on valid bids received, and underwriters might step in or reallocation might occur as per SEBI guidelines.
Q2: Can I invest in a closed IPO?
No, you cannot apply for shares at the IPO price once the subscription window for the IPO has closed. To invest in that company after the IPO closure, you must wait for the shares to be listed on the stock exchanges and then buy them from the secondary market through your broker.
Q3: Which IPO had the highest oversubscription?
Several IPOs in the Indian market have witnessed phenomenal oversubscription, sometimes exceeding 100 or even 200 times the offered size, especially during strong bull markets. Specific records for the ‘highest ever’ change over time and depend on the period considered; tracking financial news sources provides data on recent highly subscribed IPOs.
Q4: Is every time an IPO gives profit?
No, absolutely not. Investing in IPOs carries risks, and there is no guarantee of profit. Shares can list at a premium (above issue price), at par (at issue price), or at a discount (below issue price). Post-listing price movement is also subject to market forces, and investors can incur losses.
Q5: How can I sell my IPO shares on the listing day?
If you are allotted IPO shares and they are credited to your demat account before the listing day, you can sell them on the stock exchange once trading begins. Simply log into your trading account with your broker (e.g., HDFC Sky), select the stock, and place a sell order at the desired price or market price, just like you would for any other listed share.
Follow these simple steps to apply for an IPO through HDFC SKY. Secure your investments and explore new opportunities with ease by accessing the IPOs available on the platform.
1Login to your HDFC SKY Account
2Select Issue

Closed IPOs are Initial Public offerings of companies that are not currently accepting applications for their IPO issue as the application window has closed. The shares of Closed IPOs are yet to be listed on the stock exchanges, which is generally after a few days of the closure of their IPO issue window.
If you have successfully applied to an IPO before the closing of its IPO issue window, you can check the IPO allotment status by visiting either the IPO Registrar’s website or the stock exchange’s website. You will have to provide your PAN number or IPO application number to check the IPO allotment status. If applied through HDFC Sky, you can also check the status on the IPO tracker.
No, SEBI does not allow investors to withdraw or modify their submitted applications once the IPO issue window has closed. You can only withdraw or modify a submitted IPO application until the IPO issue is live.
SEBI introduced the ASBA process in 2008 for IPO applications. Under this process, the relevant funds are blocked and not debited until the IPO allotment is successful. In case of non-allotment, the funds are automatically released, and the IPO mandate becomes void.
In case of successful allotment, the shares are credited directly to your HDFC SKY demat account on the allotment day. On the day of listing, you can sell these shares to book listing gains or hold them for near-term or long-term gains.
No, you cannot use the money blocked under ASBA for other purposes until the IPO allotment process is complete. If the allotment is unsuccessful, the blocked amount is released back to your bank account, usually within a few days after the allotment.
Your IPO application may be rejected due to incorrect PAN details, a name mismatch between your PAN and bank account, multiple applications for the same PAN number, an incorrect UPI ID, insufficient funds in the bank account, or a missing timeline to approve the IPO UPI mandate.
No, once the scheduled IPO subscription period ends, you can no longer apply for shares. However, you can buy the shares when they are listed on the stock exchange.
Some IPOs may list at a premium due to high demand. Others may list the issue price below or at the issue price depending on market conditions and investor sentiment.
Retail investors look at the participation of institutional investors, such as mutual funds and foreign investors, as a barometer of an IPO’s success. If there is strong demand from institutional investors, retail investors view it as a positive indicator.
Since December 1, 2023, an IPO must be listed on stock exchanges within T+3 working days of the issue closure.
